New DofE Section Opportunities

Friends of the Award are pleased to offer you a selection of new section opportunities, available to any young people undertaking their DofE in the Edinburgh area.  If you are interested in any of the opportunities below, please read the bottom of each opportunity to see how to register.

Edinburgh Leisure Sport's Leadership Course:

The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership provides the ideal starting point for learners who wish to develop their leadership skills, whilst under the direct supervision of their Tutor/Assessor or other suitably qualified adult.

The syllabus is designed to develop generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of sports and/or recreational situations as well as contributing to the personal development of the learner.

The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership is a practical qualification in which learners must demonstrate their ability to lead others in simple sport/activity.

This 3 month course is being offered free of charge by Edinburgh Leisure to young people at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

The following conditions apply:

The course will be delivered over 3 months starting during the week beginning 23rd January 2012 based at Ainslie Park Leisure Centre.  (NB there will be an opportunity for participants at Silver or Gold level to extend this skills course by continuing to further coaching training for specific sports)

Participants must be prepared to complete a minimum of 6 months volunteering with Edinburgh Leisure.   This period can start during or after the completion of the initial course.

There are 12 places available on the course and participants will be taken on a first come basis.

Dependent on demand a second course may be delivered in February 2012.

 

Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET):

This is an opportunity for four young people aged 14 - 16 years to complete either their skill or volunteering section of their DofE programme with RHET.

RHET provides educational outings, mainly for primary school children, to farms in the Edinburgh area to allow them to learn about agriculture, food production and land use in their area.   

Participants would meet with our local RHET education officer to discuss the programme.   Thereafter, the programme would involve participants making their way to local farms to assist with educational visits.  They would also assist at pre-planned events including the Royal Highland Show in June 2012.

Participants would expect to gain a better understanding of farming, food production and the countryside.

Develop leadership, interpersonal and presentation skills and a basic understanding of running an event.

Fresh Start:

Fresh Start in an Edinburgh based charity that helps provide people who have been homeless get established in their new home.

They are looking for volunteers who are 16 years and over to assist them with their work.    There are a range of opportunities available, from helping to prepare starter packs, decorating and testing electrical appliances.   Training and support is provided.
