Free Lowland Leader Training for volunteers
FOTA are excited to announce a year of free Lowland Leader and additional first aid courses for local DofE volunteers, thanks to Lottery funding from Awards for All Scotland.
The Lowland Leader award is the National Governing Body qualification for leading groups of walkers in lowland countryside and woodland: the perfect setting for Bronze DofE expeditions. The Expedition Skills Module covers campcraft, remote supervision and methods of teaching expedition skills to participants.
We have put together a document outlining the steps to becoming fully qualified to supervise Bronze walking expeditions which you may like to download or forward to volunteer colleagues.
Free places are offered on all of the Lowland Leader Training, Assessment and Expedition Skills Module courses we deliver in partnership with Bangholm Outdoor Centre, on seven dates from May 2017 to April 2018. Please click here for dates and more information on the Lowland Leader Award. To apply for a free training place please complete the application form and return by post or email to Neil Birch at the FOTA office. Free places will be granted subject to availability and subject to a commitment to use your training to supervise expeditions organised within City of Edinburgh Council DofE Centres on a voluntary basis.
We are starting a programme of informally led local walks for DofE leaders, these will be a great opportunity to meet other leaders as well as to gain personal walking experience if you're working towards a leadership qualification. Click here for more info and dates.
We are also putting together some suggested local walk ideas for aspirant and trainee walk leaders to go out and do alone or with friends, family, or fellow trainees. Click here to see our first few suggestions.
Dates of upcoming first aid courses can be found on our Training Dates page.
Not a local DofE volunteer? Places are available on all our courses at reasonable costs. More info...
