Basic Expedition Leader Award Training FOTA (Edinburgh and the Lothians)

We are registered with Sports Leader UK to deliver BELA training.

We run BELA here at Trinity Academy in Edinburgh as weekly sessions (3 hours per week). Participants complete over 90 hours of training.  The next course is planned to start in January 2012.

These sessions cover:

  • Introduction and team games
  • Maps and navigation
  • Equipment
  • Food and camp craft
  • First Aid training
  • Access Code, Weather, Land owners
  • Planning for expeditions - paperwork
  • Practical planning for expeditions - Assessment weekends

There are two training weekends with close supervision from experienced leaders.

Consolidation

After completion of the above training, candidates need to complete a minimum of 30 hours consolidating their skills, by accompanying other DofE groups over 2 or more weekends, before attending an assessment weekend. Total hours of training, around 120 hours, plus research time.

The 22 hour assessment weekend takes place over 3 days.

First Aid

The first aid course has to be at least 8 hours emergency first aid and is tailored towards the outdoors.

Registration with Sports Leader UK

Registration of candidates costs £56.00. This is included in our fees.

Costs

Our current charge of £275 includes all tuition, expedition transport, equipment hire and registration fee with Sports Leader UK.
